Pocklington RUFC brought the 2007-08 season to a close at the weekend with their awards night on Friday followed by the annual encounter with the President's XV on Sunday.
The President’s game on Sunday produced some quality rugby and was an entertaining social afternoon.

But on the day class and experience told as the President’s men ran out 50-5 winners.

Late season injuries had shorn Pocklington of a host of key players, and they fielded a lineup that contained no fewer than ten teenagers. Against them the majority of the President’s side, led by former Premiership lock Mick Watson, had played at National League level or above.

And though the Pocklington lads never stopped trying, the President’s craft and expertise at the breakdown, and balance and angles out wide meant there was always going to be one winner. There were two tries apiece for Hull Ionians wingers Gary Stevenson and Tim Nixon, who finished strongly against his former teammates, and Ionians’ scrum half James Greene also darted over.

Pocklington’s youngsters continued to battle with Dan Pickard making some meaty charges up front and Mark Stringer and Jack Holbrough often threatening to break through in midfield.

But though Pocklington spent long periods on the attack, the President’s men always had the know-how to make the right intervention. And it was summed up with five minutes to go when Pocklington drove for their opponents’ line but the President’s men once again stripped them of the ball in the tackle and sent free-running Hull fullback Alex Piercy away on an 80 yard gallop to complete and impressive hattrick.

To their credit, Pock kept going to the end and finally got their reward with some good back play down the right, Joe Holbrough starting the move and his brother Jack powering over for the consolation try.
