LONDESBOROUGH Park Cricket Club returned to the top of the Hunters York and District Cricket League Division 3 without playing last Saturday.
In a statement on the League’s website, Park’s elevation is explained by the following: “‘Sheriff Hutton have been handed a 17-point bonus following the League management committee’s decision to award them their recent game against Hull YPI who were
deemed to have included Yorkshire League players in their side as their senior team had a blank Saturday.”
This decision leaves the Park four points clear of Hull and 62 points ahead of third-placed New Earswick as the second half of the season begins.
This Saturday Londesborough travel to Thorp Arch & Boston Spa whilst the second team entertain Goole Town Seconds.
Londesborough Park’s July Cricket Festival will be in top gear for the next three Sundays with six-a-side competitions planned every week.
Sunday, 13 July sees Londesborough host the ever popular Pub & Club Competition. On one pitch teams of non-cricketers will slug it out for the John Hall Memorial Trophy.
Last year’s winners Market Weighton Wasters face stiff competition from the Red Lion, Half Moon, Bay Horse, Griffin and Market Weighton Institute.
On the other pitch a more serious competition takes place with some teams having regular League cricketers in their ranks. This year the organisers have introduced a handicap system giving teams of lesser ability the opportunity to compete. Entries this year and handicaps are from: Northern Boyz Luv Gravy (0), Meadow Drivers (5 run start), Hawkett’s Harriers (10), Market Weighton Magpies (10), Holme Tommies (20) and Nobody’s Inn (20).
Sunday, 20 July sees the Under-15 Competition featuring the welcome return of Beverley Ladies. In total ten teams will attempt to lift the trophy with local entries from Stamford Bridge, Yapham and Londesborough.
As news of the excellent reputation of the tournament spreads an entry has been accepted this year from Scunthorpe Cricket Club.
Sunday, 27 July sees the turn of the Under 13s and the organisers are to welcome Thixendale into the competition. The village has had the foresight to enter a team into the York Junior Cricket Associat-ion and from all accounts are making good progress.
All of the six-a-side competitions commence at 10am and the usual refreshments are available including barbecue.
Teams competing this Sunday are reminded that a prompt start is essential to ensure the tournament finishes on schedule.
