IT WAS a great couple of days for Holme on Spalding Moor Primary School on the sports field when they took on the best school teams from Yorkshire at both cricket and rugby on Friday last and Monday of this week.
The school's cricket team, having successfully qualified for the Yorkshire finals, travelled to Headingley as winners of the Wolds Regional event and reaching the final of the East Riding competition.
At Headingley they played in the finals again
st 11 other schools from all over Yorkshire, with the winners' moving on to the National Finals.
But after a great start which saw a 78 run victory in their first game on Yorkshire Cricket Club's famous pitch, the weather then changed and rain forced the remainder of the competition indoors. A victory in game two, followed by a narrow 3 run defeat in the final group game meant Holme School finished second in their group, qualifying for the semi-finals as best runner up.
In the semi-final, they won by taking a wicket with the final ball of the game.
However, in the final, Kirkburton Middle School from Huddersfield proved just too strong, leaving Holme School to proudly claim the unofficial title of "second best primary school cricket team in Yorkshire!"
Over 1000 schools originally entered the competition so for a village school to finish runners-up is a fantastic achievement.
A few days earlier, the school's rugby team took part in a Yorkshire wide competition organised by the Leeds Rugby Foundation at Harewood House, near Leeds.
There were 97 schools taking part from all over Yorkshire. On a gloriously sunny day, the team performed extremely well, winning 3 out of 4 group games. This meant they qualified for the "second placed teams tournament" in the afternoon.
In this phase, the team performed even more heroics, winning 4 out of 4 games and qualifying for the semi-finals.
A narrow 2-1 defeat to Rawdon School from Leeds meant the tournament was over, but with 7 wins out of 9, Holme School should be proud of their achievements.
Commenting on the school’s success, Mike Smith (cricket) and Martin Fisher (rugby), teachers at the school, said that they were delighted just to be involved with two such prestigious events, but to perform so well was more than they could have hoped for.
They pointed out that, as the events were originally due to be on the same day, Holme had two completely different groups of children representing the school (19 children in all).
They added that a special mention should also go to Londesborough Park Cricket Club and Pocklington Rugby Club, where many of the school’s players are members, and who have really helped to develop the children's skills.
“The sporting attitudes of all the children were excellent and we are extremely proud of the way the children have represented the school and the region,” said the teachers.
