Video: George Costigan and Sally Wainwright in conversation at Halifax Square Chapel
George Costigan is the second patron this year, following award-winning writer Sally Wainwright, who became a patron in September 2015. He joins the likes of Glen Baxter, Sir Alan Bowness, Tim Pigott Smith, Sir Ernest Hall and Timothy West as fellow patrons at the much-loved centre.
Costigan, star of the 1986 hit film Rita, Sue and Bob Too and the recent BAFTA award-winning television drama Happy Valley, which was filmed in Calderdale, said: “I am flattered to be asked to be a patron of Square Chapel, and very pleased to accept, and hope and intend to be an active patron.”

We’re thrilled to welcome George Costigan as a patron of Square Chapel as we embark on the next chapter of our journey.”
After ten years of planning, work has begun on the building’s £6.6 million redevelopment project.
The capital build will transform the venue by creating a new extension, level access to the main space and improved facilities for everyone who uses the centre.
The space will include an intimate 108 seater multi-purpose studio theatre space for film screenings, a café-bar and much more for visitors to enjoy.
